Brief summary of background: a woman is harassed, stalked and stabbed by an unknown person called "the Poet" who turns out to be the woman herself in a dissociative state (true story). I honestly bought this for its pulpy value years ago, but wanted to read more about it because I find dissociative disorders so interesting. This was different from the usual expose because it focuses a lot on the therapy aspect. It kind of goes into the rationale behind psychoanalysis and therapeutic communication. Since the therapy portion was recreated by the patient and the therapist, I'm sure there was some editing to make it perfect, but it is still interesting to see. Like the Sybil movie (but not real life), intensive therapy frees the woman to live a normal, stable life. Sounds great, but I'm a bit skeptical...

This book moved me emotionally and shook me inside. This was about a Wichita, Kansas woman who had been abused in the past. She got letters from a man who was stalking her and taunting her. The police were helping her try and find this guy only to find out it was her all along...yet she didn't know it. It's amazing how the human brain works...or how it doesn't work in some people. You find out that she's had a really bad past, and that it's no wonder she is the way she is.

Not the most well-known case of dissociative identity, but a compelling story and unique in some aspects. The legal issues concerning responsibility when an alternate personality commits crimes while in control of the physical body are explored. These stories never have a happy ending or resolution, but each one adds needed knowledge to the subject.

I think this was a really fascinating book and it was really interesting how the author was able to become in contact w/ the main character and be able to enlist many members of friends and family plus her psychiatrist to write the story. I highly recommend it.

    Captivating, sad and disturbing.

The intensity of this book was surprising - even for the topic. It made me realize how fragile our minds are.

This is a freaky tale about a woman in my old hometown. The book wasn't well written, but the story was so compelling it almost told itself. This is from the publisher:In 1977 Ruth Finley, 47 years old, married, a mother and living in Witchita, Kans., began to receive disturbing letters. The letters gave way to harassment, which in turn culminated in her kidnapping and stabbing by the elusive criminal dubbed the "Poet." After four frustrating years the case was solved when a new police chief deduced that only Ruth herself could be the Poet.

So many multiple-personality stories out there on the newsstands, but this one has got to be unique. Just read it and you'll see. The core mystery of a criminal defendant's life comes out through psychoanalysis, and it's not what anyone expected.

I admit I didn't fully read the description of this book, so I was a little surprised. I enjoyed the therapy sessions but I think it would have been overkill if I wasn't a therapist too (and thus more interested in that type of dialogue).
