One of the best short stories I've read! I just finished The Cactus Creek Challenge last night and couldn't resist reading this little prequel. Erica Vetsch writes a great Western.

My favorite genre is historical romance, but I confess I don’t read many Westerns. I’m not sure why; I love Janette Oke’s books and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, too, but somehow it’s not my “go-to” choice when I’m looking for an engrossing read. I still enjoy them, and have several authors I read within this sub-genre, but when choosing an unfamiliar author, I will often pick a different time and place. When this short story appeared, however, by a publisher I trust, I thought I’d try it. I am so glad I did! From the first pages, I was drawn into the tale and read right on through in two quick sittings. I found the main character to be realistic, and the setting of Cactus Creek and the minor characters who populate it to be interesting. I was surprised to find a lot to love in this short story, including the fantastic historical detail like the Sheriff protecting his town from the wranglers who would pass through as they took cattle to market in Kansas. For whatever reason, I never really thought about that aspect of a cattle drive, always picturing the wranglers as the good guys protecting the cattle rather than considering that there might have been some unscrupulous ones who left damage behind as they moved on.The other thing I really enjoyed was Obadiah’s integrity in his job as Sheriff. His insistence on doing right despite the cost, even when others urge the easier path, was encouraging. Given headlines we see in today’s news, I have to say it was a refreshing read. I also liked the relationship we get to see with his son, Ben, and how he’s raising his boys to be men committed to the truth and justice. This short story is fascinating in its own right, but it also serves as an introduction to Vetsch’s upcoming novel, The Cactus Creek Challenge, and I am already hooked on the story enough to look forward to reading it and continuing the story, with a better understanding of the new Sheriff, the youngest son of the lawman we read about in this short story. Try this author and see if you might like to visit Cactus Creek yourself—I’m thinking it will be a read many historical fiction fans will enjoy!

To be only 27 pages long, the story put me right there in Cactus Creek. I could feel the grit from the dust in my teeth, the smoothness of the gun barrel in my hand, and the fear a store keeper on Main Street felt. Obadiah Wilder had a wife and three sons he loved dearly, but he also loved the town he was sheriff in and had sworn to keep safe. He became a legend when he defeated a notorious gang of brothers that had been burning down towns and killing along the way. His youngest son Ben spent a lot of time with his Pa in the jail, looking at wanted posters, sweeping the floor and soaking up the atmosphere. It's not hard to imagine that years down the road he would become sheriff. This is a great lead in to the novel The Cactus Creek Challenge coming out in July. Erica Vetsch does a great job of not only telling a story that you would expect to see in a "shootem up" cowboy movie but she describes everything so well that you can picture yourself in that town with all the characters. I'm still curious to know why Len shot the 19 year old French girl that was working in the saloon......

Little Ben Wilder has some mighty big boots to fill if he is going to follow in his daddy Obediah's steps to be sheriff someday! As he watches him take care of the town of Cactus Creek, he couldn't be more proud of his daddy catching one of those notorious Dickerson Gang brothers. And you should see him shoot that gun of his, why little Ben sure enough thinks the world of him! This is a fast paced, short western story that is an excellent prequel of Erica's soon to be released book "Cactus Creek Challenge". It starts out as if reading a newspaper clipping of the day Obediah pinned that sheriffs badge on his chest & faced down the Dickerson Gang. The story pulled me right smack into the middle of Cactus Creek when a saloon girl gets shot and Obediah goes to serve justice to the killer. It was plumb packed with plenty of action and well-rounded characters that I can't wait to learn more about in her full length book! You ought to pick up this little gem of a story for yourself, you won't want to miss this or her "Cactus Creek Challenge" when it comes out!

Short, but sweet and full of adventure! It is the prequel for The Cactus Creek Challenge and tells the story of Sheriff Obadiah Wilder and his infamous tangle with the Dickenson gang. Sheriff Wilder is going about his business like it's a normal day, about to conduct rounds of the town when someone bursts into the jail claiming trouble is afoot. The sheriff races to the saloon, arriving to the sound of a gunshot. Inside he finds a dead woman and fingers pointing up, he races outside and around the back to find the culprit jumping down from the balcony. Upon refusal to halt, the sheriff fires wounding the man in the arm. Back at the jail, with the man in custody, Sheriff Wilder thinks he merely has to deal with a murderer when he is informed that the man is a member of the notorious Dickenson gang and his brothers will be on their way to retrieve him. All the sheriff can do is sit back and wait for the fun to arrive. A great prelude to a larger story.

Erica Vetsch gives us this quick read as a history into Ben Wilder’s past as a prequel to her series “The Cactus Creek Challenge”. In the prequel, Ben is a boy of 10 years and his father, a Civil War Veteran (a Yankee veteran specifically), is the Sheriff of Cactus Creek. When an outlaw is shot and arrested by Obadiah for murder, the people of Cactus Creek run scared, all except for Obadiah Wilder. A God-fearing man who stands by truth and his word given to keep the town safe, Obadiah meet the outlaw’s family in the middle of the street alone. With odds against him, and a child taken hostage, Obadiah stands firm. At what cost?Ben Wilder’s story continues in the Cactus Creek Challenge in which we will discover if his father’s honor, integrity, and stoic presence are traits he will also hold dear to himself. The Cactus Creek Challenge, Ben Wilder’s own story, is now available.

“The Legend of Obadiah Wilder” by Erica Vetsch is a short story prequel to her upcoming novel, The Cactus Creek Challenge. I downloaded this e-book to get an idea about the series before reading the upcoming novel. The story begins in 1888 in Cactus Creek, Cutler County, Texas. Obadiah Wilder is the sheriff of Cactus Creek and takes a murderer into custody. He is part of a gang of ruthless outlaws and vows that his kin will wreak vengeance. Obadiah’s strength of character and determination are quite evident in this short story. I definitely am anxious to continue reading about this community is subsequent novels.I downloaded a free e-book copy of the book in return for my honest opinion of the book. The Legend of Obadiah Wilder: The Glorious Defeat of the Dickenson Gang ( Cactus CreekChallenge)By, Erica VetschI really enjoyed this western fiction story, The Legend of Obadiah Wilder. This is the prequel to the Cactus Creek Challenge. Erica Vetsch carries us back to the time when Obadiah was sheriff and when the Dickenson gang came to town. Everyone has always been afraid of them , is Obadiah afraid of them? Obadiah tells the true story of the defeat of the Dickenson gang. Erica pens her story so real that you feel like you are right there with them. Love the story and the characters. I can’t wait to read Erica’s new book coming in July, The Cactus Creek Challenge.

The Legend of Obadiah Wilder is Obadiah's story of how he took down the Dickenson Gang by himself when he was the sheriff in a small town in Texas. The Dickenson gang was wanted in Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Obadiah's youngest son, Ben, enjoyed spending time in the jail looking at wanted posters and he was the one to identify Len Dickenson. When Obadiah retires Ben is chosen to take his place as the new sheriff. This ebook is a short story that introduces us to the characters in Erica Vetsch's The Cactus Creek Challenge. I enjoyed reading this short story and look forward to reading the book. It is perfect to pick up and read in one evening. It reminded me of the westerns we use to watched on TV.

Obadiah is a legend in Cactus Creek. Many accounts of his exploits float around. But his good friend at the newspaper gets Obadiah to tell his story and then publishes it. This is that story. His son Ben knows all about the story because he was there. Now Ben is sheriff and his father's shoes are extremely big ones to fill.I really enjoyed this short story. The author was able to capture my attention quickly. The characters are engaging and fit with the plot. The detail was sufficient to tell the reader what was happening and create a mental picture, but not so much that it overwhelmed the plot. This was my first experience with this reader and I really enjoyed it. The story was written to tie in with a book coming out soon. It definitely made me want to read the next book.

Wow, what a fun, action-packed short story, with a Wild West flare! Great setup for the full length novel, Cactus Creek Challenge, with the transition at the end too.Keeping law and order back in the 1870's wasn't an easy task, especially when a notorious gang rides through town, but Sheriff Wilder doesn't scare easily. A murder suspect who threatens not only him, but the whole town, makes everyone nervous. What will happen when the rest of his outlaw brothers catch up to him? A fun introduction to young Ben, Sheriff Wilder's son, who grows up to become the center of the novel to follow, along with his friend Cassie. Looking forward to reading Cactus Creek Challenge soon!

This is a short fast-paced story that takes place in the old west. Obadiah Wilder is the sheriff who happens to shoot and arrest one of the Dickenson Gang. When the town finds out who he is they try to convince Obadiah to let him go so the town will not be in danger. As a lawman, Obadiah says no. When the rest of the gang shows up, can Obadiah save the town?Young Ben Wilder wants to be the sheriff when he grows up. Cassie Bucknell is only five years old, but loves Ben. This is a prequel to The Cactus Creek Challenge. I will definitely have to read it now.I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Legend of Obadiah Wilder is the perfect introduction to the Cactus Creek Challenge! Although this story was very brief, I did not feel that anything was lacking in the storytelling. Erika Vetsch perfectly established her characters and packed in action that had me reliving my childhood hours spent watching Bonanza and Gunsmoke. As I finished reading the story, I felt both satisfied with the outcome and very anxious to find out more about the characters introduced to me. Vetch did an amazing job in setting her readers up for the next book, and I highly recommend her work!

The wild west and a legends tale!Everyone in town has their own version of the epic showdown between their beloved sheriff and the Dickenson brother's. Now as he is retiring from duty Obadiah Wilder sheriff of Cactus Creek tells the story in his words. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and felt as though I could be reading a real old west story! This is a great short story and prequel to Erica's book The Cactus Creek Challenge, which I can not wait to read and see what is next for Cactus Creek and it's newest sheriff!

In Sheriff Wilder’s own words he tells the true tale of his defeat of the Dickenson Gang in Cactus Creek, Texas. I found this story of his defeat of the notorious Dickenson Gang a quick read and a true western. It was like watching a half hour western play across the pages. From the first page to the last I enjoyed the gun play, the unease of the towns people and the calm, in control attitude of the Sheriff.. I really did enjoy this short story...

Somehow missed that this was the "Foreword" (actually, a teaser) for a series, clearly a western romance series. It was pretty decent as a short story. Obadiah arrests one brother in a gang and then has to face the other two brothers in a shootout. His son, Ben, plays a key role in the plot (and, apparently, in the coming series).

Loved the way the author told the story through the eyes of Obadiah. Lots of action that showed the bravery of Obadiah Wilder and the changes he was able to make in this small Texas town. It's a quick read with lots of descriptions that make you feel like you can see, feel and touch what is going on in the book. It's a great start for this series! Can't wait to read Ben's story!

Erica Vetsch brings the old West to the reader in this short story about a legendary sheriff. Her characters are interesting and she leaves the reader wanting to know more of Cactus Creek and the individuals she introduced. What happened to the sheriff now that his son is in charge? Will Ben and Cassie find romance? Are there any more Dickensons on the loose? A quick read you won't want to miss.

A short, fun story that reads like history, but works together like fiction.
